On behalf of the Bay Islands Conservation Association and the ACROPORA Roatan 2025 Eco Trail Run Vida para la Isla 20K 10K 5K and 2K committee, I would like to introduce ourselves; BICA is an environmental NGO that has been working in the Bay Islands, Honduras since the 90s. Our mission is to conserve in a participatory, transparent and sustainable way the coastal marine resources and the ecosystem services which they provide for the social and cultural well-being of present and future generations in the Bay Islands.
In 2017, we launched this race as part of our awareness campaign about the importance of our reefs and the need to minimize plastic in our daily lives. Since then, we have promoted single-use plastic bans (passed in 2018 in Roatán) #PLASTICFREEROATAN, strengthened the recyclers' association, and implemented pilot separation projects in the Bay Islands. In 2024, we will continue to promote public policies such as banning sunscreens containing chemicals that cause mortality in corals and reef fish.
By 2025, we hope to use this fun, family-friendly event to create change that benefits people and reef health through the following actions:
- Generate funds for the construction of a community center in the Crawfish Rock community
- Raise awareness about how waste and other chemicals affect us and our reefs.
- Implement coral restoration projects in Roatan.
- Promote a municipal ordinance to ban petroleum-based sunscreens in Roatan.
On August 2, 2025, we will host the 7th ACROPORA Roatan 2025 Eco Trail Run 2K, 5K, 10K, 20K Vida; the event will start at 6:00 a.m. and finish at Palmetto Bay Plantation.
This year, the funds generated by the event will be allocated as follows:
- 40% to the construction of a community center in the community of Crawfish Rock
- 30% to coral restoration programs that BICA carries out in the Bay Islands National Marine Park (PNMIB)
- 30% to solid waste management programs that BICA carries out in the communities surrounding the PNMIB
It has been and will continue to be a privilege for us to have your sponsorship. In recent years, your support has contributed to enhancing the event and the activities carried out by BICA to protect Roatan's natural resources.
