On behalf of the Bay Islands Conservation Association (BICA) and the organizing
committee of the ACROPORA Roatan 2026 Eco Trail Run –Vida para la Isla
20K, 10K, 5K & 2K, we are proud to welcome you to our 8th edition, taking place on
August 1st, 2026.
BICA is a Honduran environmental nonprofit organization that has been working in the Bay Islands since the 1990s. Our mission is to conserve, in a participatory, transparent, and sustainable manner, the coastal and marine resources of the Bay Islands and the ecosystem services they provide for the social, cultural, and economic well-being of present and future generations.
A Race With Purpose
Launched in 2017, the ACROPORA Eco Trail Run was created as part of a broader awareness campaign highlighting the importance of coral reefs and the urgent need to reduce single-use plastics in our daily lives. Since then, the event has become a platform for measurable environmental impact.
Through this initiative and our broader conservation work, we have:
-
Promoted and supported the single-use plastic ban passed in Roatan in 2018 (#PlasticFreeRoatan)
-
Strengthened the local recyclers’ association
-
Implemented pilot waste separation projects across the Bay Islands
-
Advanced public policy efforts, including advocacy to ban petroleum-based sunscreens that harm coral reefs and marine life
2026: Running for Community & Reef Health
In 2026, we continue to use this fun, family-friendly sporting event as a catalyst for lasting environmental and community impact. Our goals include:
-
Generating funds to support the construction of a community center in Crawfish Rock
-
Raising awareness about how waste and harmful chemicals affect our health and our reefs
-
Expanding coral restoration initiatives in Roatán
-
Promoting municipal policies that protect reef ecosystems, including restrictions on reef-toxic sunscreens
