OCEAN PROTECTORS
What are we doing?
We are implementing the "Protectors of the Ocean" project on the island of Guanaja, Honduras, as an economical alternative to artisanal fishing. This project focuses on training community leaders, fishermen and local divers to promote sustainable tourism and marine conservation practices. In addition, we provide training in safe and responsible diving, as well as in environmental legislation and the management of protected areas such as the Bay Islands National Marine Park.
Why do we do it?
We carried out this project due to the decrease in fishing resources in Guanaja, which has led fishermen to look for other sources of livelihood, endangering their lives and the marine environment. We recognize the economic and environmental importance of Guanaja's marine ecosystems, both for local communities and for regional biodiversity. Therefore, we seek to change fishers' perception of fishery resources, promoting sustainable tourism practices that benefit the community and the marine ecosystem.
