Waste Separation, BICA Roatan

 PENSACOLA, ROATAN

In 2019, the project "Promotion of new productive activities and environmental education related to the recycling of discarded materials for the proper management of solid waste phase II" with funds from MAR Fund the pilot separation project was implemented and continues to this day.

Through the application of 50 separation surveys, the interest of the community in the separation was made known and it was an easy area to start due to the interest of the community board. The Roatan Electric Company (RECO) donated the waste separation bins for the community, each home received two sacks to separate at home. Currently, the community scientist that collects the separation visits the homes weekly and the salary is covered through grants,

By the year 2023, 18 homes continue to participate in the community pilot separation program and the pilot community was also marked with recycling posters. To date, 501.71 LBS of recyclable material has been collected.

Sandy Bay, Roatan

In 2022, through the project "Waste, People and Reef Health" we began the waste separation pilot project in Sandy Bay.

Through the application of 36 separation surveys, the separation station was donated by RECO, and the salary of the community scientist to collect the recycles every week was covered partly through the support of Anthony’s Key Resort (AKR).

The homes participating were given two reusable sacks to separate their recyclable materials and a poster on recycling was handed out to each household. The pilot community was also marked with recycling posters and stickers.

By the year 2023, 19 households continue to participate in the community pilot separation program. To date, 1028.7 LBS of recyclable material has been collected.
