Islanders for Change
Build capacities in young adults from the Bay Islands, empowering them as environmental leaders and agents of change within their communities.
Mission
To empower young adults from the Bay Islands Marine National Park through training in marine conservation, community leadership, and sustainable practices, promoting behavioral change and biodiversity preservation.
Vision
To cultivate a generation of empowered youth who inspire their communities to preserve and sustainably manage marine resources, fostering thriving ecosystems and resilient coastal communities for future generations.
Results
The program began in 2023 with the participation of five young adults from Roatán and three from Utila. From then, participants have engaged in over ten marine conservation activities, including coral nursery cleaning, water quality monitoring, mangrove reforestation and native species reforestation in Port Royal National Park, lobster and conch monitoring, plastic brand audits, beach and marine cleanups, fish larvae monitoring, and the validation of the coral spawning calendar for 2024.
Achievements
-
6 young participants were certified in open water, advanced open water and rescue diving.
-
8 young participants trained in marine biological monitoring methodologies and leadership.
All of this has been possible with the support of Conservation Leadership Programme, Coalition Wild, Sun Divers, Moana Divers and Utila Dive Center.
